July 2019

IMG_0567(1)Devin Johnson ’09 brought his many talents back to Manchester in March to benefit Burr and Burton’s Creative Arts Department. Fresh off a performance at the Triad Theater in NYC, Johnson’s “Let The Feet Do The Talkin’: an Evening of Stories, Tap and Song,” lifted our spirits during mud season. Devin is well known as a talented dancer, singer, and actor. He has a degree in Musical Theater Performance from Montclair State University, is a member of Actors Equity, and has performed at numerous regional theaters including the Weston Playhouse, where he was seen in “42nd Street,” “Peter and the Starcatcher,” “Mamma Mia,” and last summer in “West Side Story.” “Let The Feet Do The Talkin’” also featured Burr and Burton students Zoe Grigsby ’20 and Matthew Scott ’20.

Michael A. Powers ’60
and his wife, Barbara Powers, were honored at the Founders Day Luncheon at Birchbrook in May for all they have done for Burr and Burton over the years. Mike is a current member of the Board of Trustees, both Mike and Barbara are members of the Joseph Burr Society, and they have served and currently serve on numerous nonprofit organizations near and far. At the Founders Day event, Mike noted, “In a time when most Vermont secondary school’s enrollment is decreasing, BBA has experienced steady growth…. This is a testament of the opportunities and incredible curriculum the school provides to each student individually and collectively.” See the current issue of the Summer VIEW newsletter for the full story. We are grateful to Mike and Barbara Powers for their extraordinary support of our students.

Remembering Alex Johnson 79

JohnsonWe were saddened by the passing of Alex Johnson ’79 in February. Alex was a standout athlete on the varsity football team, and a star basketball player during his four years at Burr and Burton. He is one of only two Burr and Burton students to play on four consecutive State Championship basketball teams (along with Angel Rivera ’79 in ’76, ’77, ’78, and ’79), and the lone Burr and Burton player and only one of nine in Vermont with over 1,000 rebounds in their high school career. For many years he was part of the family business, Johnson and Son Landscaping. Tremendous thanks to the many alumni and friends who made donations in memory of Alex to support boys and girls basketball at Burr and Burton. Members of Alex’s family and fellow basketball players met at the school this past spring to talk about his life. Pictured at the marble steps in front of the Seminary, left to right, Burr and Burton basketball captains Carol Herbert ’21, Jake Baker ’19, Sue Vaccaro ’84, Carl Johnson ’81, Patrick Forstmann ’19, Tommy Baker ’20, and Ashley Heaton ’20.

Annual Giving thanks

DSC_0312It would be impossible to describe the breadth and depth of what goes on at Burr and Burton from day to day in this short space. Alumni support makes possible over 170 academic courses, an amazing array of arts, music, and performing arts, and a long list of sports and athletics from Alpine to Ultimate (frisbee) and everything in-between. And then add in the Target Program, Success Program, Mountain Campus, Dene Farm, and after school Clubs. Your support makes a wonderful difference and we thank the many alumni who contributed their time, talent, and treasure during the past year, July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019! A big round of applause to our Annual Giving volunteers who helped us get to the finish line this spring: Stephen Drunsic ’93, Meredith Ams Fleurie ’05, Liz Hand Mackey ’05, Jill Merrow ’85, Judi LaMontagne McPhail ’65, Gloria Rovnak Palmer ’81, Lisa Kern Rohde ’98, and Jon Wilson ’01.

Abe Madkour ’86 was named publisher of Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Abe MadkourDaily. “Abe is a highly respected voice in the sports business community and a trusted and valued colleague,” said SBJ founder and chairman Whitney Shaw. “This promotion gives him responsibility not just for the content and product sides of Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily but also the audience, sales and marketing sides.” Abe will continue as executive editor of the Journal and Daily, and SBJ’s conference group will report to him as well. Abe joined Sports Business Daily when it launched in August 1994 and became editor-in-chief two years later. He was named executive editor of the Journal and Daily in 2003. Earlier in his career, Abe was a legislative aide for U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and also worked for the Washington Bullets and Baltimore Orioles. Abe is a graduate of the University of Vermont.

Spreading the word about the 45th

nancyandkevindorsethollow10162016We welcome Kevin O’Toole ’74 as our newest Class Liaison. He shared the following for this issue. After attending Burr and Burton (then Seminary and now Academy), Kevin graduated from University of Vermont in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. After a short stint at an advertising agency in upstate New York, Kevin went on to the University of Notre Dame Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1982. He missed Vermont, and returned to establish a general law practice in Pawlet in 1984 before moving into his present office in Dorset Village in 1986. In the best move he ever made, Kevin married Nancy Field in 1996 and they continue to reside in Dorset. Kevin still plays golf and does not ski nearly as well as he should after 26 years of winter weekends at Bromley as a ticket checker. Since 1987, Kevin has been a member of the Dorset Players and has participated backstage as well as making an occasional appearance on stage. He looks back fondly on his time at Burr and Burton, when he clearly had no clue but was open to suggestions. Kevin looks forward to seeing those who can make it from the class of ’74 to our 45th reunion.

New Advancement Director at the helm

Screen Shot 2019-07-03 at 12.08.09 PMWith Cindy Gubb retiring April 1 after 13 years leading the Advancement Office, we welcomed a new advancement director at the end of May. Kate Leach comes to Burr and Burton from Dartmouth College, where she helped guide strategy and operations for Leadership and Regional Giving in the ongoing $3B capital campaign. Her professional background also includes communications-focused work in politics and corporate PR. A DC native, Kate had the great fortune to marry a dairy farmer in Pawlet; she and her husband Seth live on the family farm, and her son James looks forward to joining BBA in the class of 2027!

Hockey shorts

A big shout out to our former Bulldogs who are doing great things after their high school careers are over. Former Burr and Burton hockey players Nathan Severance ’17 and Alex Carpenter (Mt. Anthony ’18) helped lead the New England Wolves (Eastern Hockey League) to a championship victory in style with a comeback win in the 3rd period! Alex Carpenter was named MVP of the Championship game with two goals and an assist. Sam Cottrell ’18 played the 2018-19 season with the Northern Cyclones, a junior ice hockey organization playing in the U.S. Premier Hockey League. The team plays their home games at the Cyclones Arena in Hudson, New Hampshire.

Blast from the past

MHS Photographs 049In 1894 a cyclone blew through Manchester Village causing extensive damage to Burr and Burton Seminary, toppling the Gothic style belfry (which landed near the front door!), and tearing most of the roof off the annex. It uprooted over 100 trees, destroyed houses and toppled chimneys, according to reports in the New York Times. There were no fatalities. It took the Junior Alumni Association 5 years to raise the $500 through public subscription needed for a new tower and bell, which was completed in 1899.
